Welcome!

Teamwork is often the best way to accomplish something — and that’s certainly true of endocrinology and diabetes care at Columbus Regional Health. The newly formed practice brings together a dedicated team of experts in endocrinology (hormone-related disorders) and diabetes.

Patients do better when their healthcare providers work together. “For those with diabetes, there’s strong evidence that a collaborative approach to care improves blood sugar control,” said Dr. Himani Sharma, an endocrinologist at the practice.

Endocrinology Care

Dr. Sharma is board-certified in internal medicine and board-eligible in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. She recently completed a fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. Her areas of expertise include:

  • Type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes
  • Thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer
  • Adrenal and pituitary gland disorders
  • Bone disorders such as osteoporosis
  • Metabolic health in pregnancy
  • Transgender medicine

For those with diabetes, she strives to provide the latest available technology, such as continuous glucose monitors, when needed.

Diabetes Services

Another thing that helps people with diabetes thrive is understanding their condition. To that end, we often have patients work with an experienced diabetes team. Health care providers around the community also refer their diabetes patients to the team, which offers:

  • Diabetes education on monitoring blood sugar, using diabetes technology, staying physically active and more
  • Nutritional counseling about healthy eating options

“Research shows that this type of education and support can make a big difference in helping people manage their diabetes well,” said Sandy Kuniewicz, M.S., R.D., CDCES, lead clinical dietitian and a certified diabetes educator.

Some people with diabetes need additional help from an endocrinologist to get their disease in control, Kuniewicz said. “In the past, providers had to send those patients to out-of-town specialists, where there was often a long waiting list. Now, they can refer patients to Dr. Sharma. That’s a huge benefit for our community.”
