From Care Partner to CNO: A Career Full of Opportunities

Staci Glick, CNO

In her 20-year career at Columbus Regional Health, Staci Glick is grateful for the many opportunities she’s been given to take on new roles. “I’ve been granted a lot of opportunities in positions that I could grow on my own and in those roles, I’ve had successful outcomes and developed relationships along the way,” she said.  Staci’s reputation of positive outcomes and collaboration across the organization resulted in her recent promotion to Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services.

When Staci joined CRH in 2000, while in nursing school, she began as a care partner and a cardiac monitor technician. After completing her first set of clinicals at IUPUI, she was paired with a registered nurse to shadow. Once she graduated, she started as a registered nurse on the night shift.

Staci’s other earlier roles included charge nurse and patient care coordinator. After the 2008 flood closed the hospital for nearly five months, she was given the opportunity to move into the new position of specialty lead nurse for cardiovascular services. In that role, she helped lead the Chest Pain Center accreditation process, the Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack care) team, and also gained responsibility for surgical care improvement initiatives.

In 2011, when the hospital began transitioning to the Cerner electronic medical record (EMR) system, she joined the clinical team in an information services role, helping to develop new content for the system. Her work was recognized by the Information Services department, which encouraged her to apply for the EMR Clinical Change Manager position, a new role. She accepted the position, which later became the Director of Clinical Informatics role, based on the broad responsibilities of the position. In that role, she worked with bedside nursing staff and providers to help improve workflows and documentation.

In September 2017, Staci was named Director of Nursing Practice. During that time, she earned her master’s degree in nursing. She held the director position until 2019, when the previous Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) stepped down, and Staci assumed the interim CNO role. With the onset of COVID-19 in our community, Staci said a lot of great work was accomplished early on to respond to the crisis, and being in the CNO interim role gave her more visibility to the executive team. That teamwork and collaboration helped her decide that she wanted to be considered for the permanent CNO position. “It was a really great experience to pull together and get a lot of great work done and be part of that and see the impact you can make on things,” she said.

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Terry Deis, to whom Staci reports, said that Staci has demonstrated exceptional leadership, particularly during the COVID pandemic. “She has earned the respect of nursing leadership and staff through her visible and supportive leadership, rounding on all shifts, as well as rolling up her sleeves and helping with direct patient care, he said. Terry also noted that the positive relationships Staci has developed with the medical staff will serve her well in her new role and for the organization for many years to come.

Staci looks forward to further strengthening those relationships as well as growing in her new role. New to an executive-leadership position, Staci said that she feels supported by the executive team to further develop her skills and experience, and that’s been a theme throughout her career at CRH: being encouraged to grow professionally in the roles she has held.

As the new Vice President of Patient Care Services and CNO, Staci looks forward to continuing to build a foundation of trust and respect with nursing staff, growing the nursing profession, and getting “back to the art and science of nursing – the professionalism and pride in their work,” she said. “We have a really great nursing team, and we want to capitalize on those things.”
