Scholarships and Loans

Overview

Through the Columbus Regional Health Foundation, several medical scholarships, awards and loan opportunities are available to assist those interested in pursuing or advancing a career in healthcare. Please contact the Foundation office at

Scholarship Amount: A total of four $4,500 scholarships (amount may vary)

The purpose of the Robert Borczon Memorial Scholarship is to encourage Columbus Regional Hospital employees to further their education and career in healthcare. The scholarship was made available in memory of Robert Borczon, former Administrator of Columbus Regional Hospital and champion of education for Hospital employees. Awards are based on need, quality and completion of application process, personal interview, and academic performance.  Applications are available in March and the application deadline is at the end of April. 

To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must: 

  • Be currently employed at Columbus Regional Hospital for a minimum of one year.
  • Work a minimum of 40 hours per pay period.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary program.
  • Be seeking a degree in a health-related field.
  • These scholarships may be renewed to a maximum of $3,000 per individual and must be used within five years of receipt.
  • If selected as a scholarship recipient, must agree to continue employment at Columbus Regional Hospital for at least two years from final installment of the scholarship.

Scholarship Amount: $7,500 (scholarship may vary in amount)

This healthcare scholarship is awarded to a deserving medical student in southern Indiana. This scholarship was made available in memory of Dr. Ronald Roberts, a cherished local physician and advocate for providing access to medical education for all students.

To be eligible for this medical scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Be currently enrolled in at least the second year of medical school
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Reside in southern Indiana, with preference given to residents of Bartholomew, Monroe, and contiguous counties
  • No preference is given based on race, religion, sex, age, or national origin

Award Amount: $1,000

The Marion C. Dietrich Service Excellence Award was established in 2003 to honor former trustee Marion Dietrich, whose primary mission as a trustee was to see Columbus Regional Hospital become the top hospital in the nation for patient satisfaction. Founded on a generous gift by Marion and Kay Dietrich, the award is given to a Columbus Regional Hospital department that has demonstrated excellence in service.

To be eligible for this award, a department must:

  • Demonstrate "best of the best" performance in service excellence in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
  • Embody the hospital's vision to "be your health and wellness partner for life."
  • Have the most number of months at the highest level of patient satisfaction (99th percentile); the most number of months at/or above the 90th percentile; the overall average score; volume (number of customers served); and most improvement.

Loan Amount: $1,000 per year loan for a maximum of four years
The purpose of the educational loan is to provide funds to Bartholomew County residents, residents within the Hospital's service area, and Columbus Regional Hospital employees who need financial assistance to attend college, and to provide health-related career opportunities for those who may not otherwise seek post-high school education. It is a non-interest loan as long as repayment guidelines are met. The repayment schedule is negotiated between the individual and the Foundation and must be repaid in full after graduation. Tuition reimbursement may be used to repay the loan. This loan is made payable to the school and may be used for tuition, books, labs, or associated academic expenses.

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Live in Bartholomew County, reside within the Hospital's service area, or be employed by Columbus Regional Hospital or one of its affiliates
  • Be enrolled in a health-related course of study
  • Maintain a passing grade of "C" or better, or "Pass" in a Pass/Fail course
  • Meet credit approval

Award Amount: Up to $20,000 over a two-year period
The Leonard Fellowship was established in 2007 by the hospital trustees and the Foundation Board following Doug Leonard's retirement in 2007 as CEO of Columbus Regional Hospital. The Leonard Fellowship was created to honor Doug's passion for innovation in the care of patients, to recognize his legacy as the inspiration for a Center for Healthcare Innovation, and to encourage and recognize accomplished innovators at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Fellows can be nominated by any hospital employee or medical staff member. To win the Innovation Fellowship, recipients must be held in high regard across the hospital, must be nationally recognized for innovation work, and have demonstrated major impact on CRH patient care.

Heritage Fund - the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County is created primarily to:

  • Provide responsible stewardship of gifts donated for broad charitable purposes
  • Develop leadership to address community issues
  • Serve as a catalyst for positive change in partnership with others
  • Promote philanthropy broadly within the community
